Keynote Speaker
Heather Steel manages the Insights function for the Institute for Canadian Citizenship (ICC), a national non-profit that engages all Canadians in citizenship and ensures new citizens are welcomed and included. Heather oversees Insights’ strategic development and mandate to bring the experiences, perspectives and voices of new citizens to the Canadian mainstream in both quantitative and qualitative form. Playing together: new citizens, sports and belonging was the ICC’s first major research initiative. |
Workshop Facilitator
Dr. Janice Forsyth is the Director of the International Centre for Olympic Studies at Western (ICOS), where she is also an Assistant Professor in the School of Kinesiology, Faculty of Health Sciences. She specializes in Olympic and Canadian sport history. Her research on the Olympic Games addresses questions of power and cultural representation as they relate to Aboriginal involvement in Olympic Ceremonies. Since joining academe in 2005, her projects have attracted substantial research funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), university, and government agencies. Outside of academe, Janice frequently provides leadership and support to government and service organizations in policy and program development and evaluation. Organizations she has worked with include the national Aboriginal Sport Circle, the Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women in Sport and Physical Activity (CAAWS), Athletes CAN, Sport Canada, and Canadian Heritage. |
Workshop Facilitator
Kyle Rich is a PhD Candidate studying sport management in the School of Kinesiology at Western University. Broadly, Kyle's research looks at the socio-cultural significance of sport and the management of sport and recreation in diverse contexts. More specifically, his PhD dissertation will examine the complexities of sport and recreation policy and management in rural communities. Outside of academia, Kyle works as an Instructor Trainer for the Lifesaving Society and Canadian Red Cross as well as with the Community Cup (Ottawa) and PridehouseTO (Toronto). |
