Session Descriptions
Keynote Speech:
Playing Together: New Citizens, Sports & Belonging
Presented by Heather Steel (Institute for Canadian Citizenship)
In this year’s Summit, keynote speaker Heather Steel will talk about the Institute of Canadian Citizenship’s ground-breaking report attributing sports as an effective means to help new Canadians feel at home. This report involves the insights of more than 4,000 new citizens and how they collectively tell the tale of becoming Canadian, in part, by playing and watching sports together. This keynote will also offer practical recommendations for participants to reduce and eliminate barriers to participation and ways to celebrate and facilitate inclusion as a shared sport community.
Workshops:
Sporting Legacies: Levelling the Playing Field for Aboriginal People
Presented by Dr. Janice Forsyth (Western University)
Understand the nature of involvement of Aboriginal communities in organized sport and physical activity is still a relatively new and unexplored field. Join Dr. Janice Forsyth as she leads an interactive session discussing the critical issues related to Aboriginal health and sport and physical activity patterns and how individuals and organizations in the sport community can address them. This workshop will also give participants the chance to discuss in an open and insightful way about the possibilities and challenges of Aboriginal sport development in Canada now and in the years ahead.
Engaging Rural Communities in Sport
Presented by Kyle Rich (Western University)
