December 19, 2008 - At our recent Sport Forum on Wednesday December 17, 2008 we made a special announcement regarding membership and want to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to benefit from this offer.
Organizations that have their membership form into the SPORT4ONTARIO office by January 10, 2009 will be entered into a draw for a professional development session valued at $500.  We will make all arrangements and cover the cost for a session of your choice to be delivered to your board, staff or a combination thereof.  And we've added this incentive for new memberships as well - a second prize of $500!

ONTARIO ENCOURAGES TOBACCO-FREE SPORT AND RECREATION PROGRAMS
November 26, 2008 (Toronto): Sport and recreation organizations across Ontario will have better insight into how to create tobacco-free policies, thanks to a new website launched on Friday, November 21, 2008.

November 24, 2008 - High-performance athletes will now have more access to top quality coaching through Ontario helping over 1,000 coaches receive enhanced training and competitive opportunities.
Ontario is investing $1.9 million from the Quest for Gold Program to help the Canadian Sport Centre Ontario, and the Coaches Association of Ontario provide more support to high-performance coaches and athletes.

November 15, 2008 - It is time to renew or begin your membership investment in SPORT4ONTARIO.  On behalf of the Board of Directors, thank you for your support. This past year has been one of tremendous growth for the Provincial Sport Organizations Council. In November we officially changed our operating name to SPORT4ONTARIO, complete with a new logo. Shortly thereafter we moved into our brand new office at 3 Concorde Gate complete with additional space for our Resource Library.
Our growing network of members reaches all aspects of the non-profit sport sector and our ability to respond to and engage with the sport sector as a collective makes membership with SPORT4ONTARIO a valuable and essential part of effective sport management and advocacy. Your membership support is vital to our success and your contribution enables this organization to engage in on-going provincial and national dialogue on the state of amateur sport.

PSO COUNCIL OFFICALLY CHANGES ITS NAME!

SPORT4ONTARIO UNVEILS FALL PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP CALENDAR
November 5, 2008 - SPORT4ONTARIO is pleased to announce the release of the Fall 2008 Professional Development Calendar.  Highlights include the return engagement of Peg Lahn to provide insight to grant-writing for sport organizations.  Peg was well received by the attendees of her workshop in May and we have had overwhelming requests to bring her back again.  In addition, one of the top five requests for workshop topic has been "Board-Staff Relations" and we are delighted to have Jan Campbell of Strategisense take us through this interactive and informative workshop.  There will be two workshops held, one for staff and one for directors... . October 22, 2008 (Toronto): Since the McGuinty government delivered the 2008 Ontario Budget in March, the global economy has changed.  The slowing U.S. economy and global financial situation are causing significant uncertainty in many jurisdictions, and Ontario is no exception.  In recent years, Ontario has also been affected by the strong Canadian dollar and high oil prices – additional factors beyond the government’s control.
Based on the information available to date and on the significant lowering of private-sector forecasts, the government is projecting Ontario real gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 0.1 per cent for 2008, compared with 1.1 per cent at the time of the 2008 Budget.  As a result, the government expects that revenue will decline.
The government is projecting a deficit of $500 million in 2008-09.  A deficit, followed by a plan for its elimination, represents a balanced response to today’s global reality...
 
WHAT WOULD YOUR ORGANIZATION DO WITH $5,000??
October 21, 2008 – The PSO Council has been fortunate to participate in the City of Toronto Bingo Lottery Program.  This Program provides funding to various eligible organizations within the City of Toronto, for the purpose of benefiting the residents of Toronto.  Recently, the PSO Council was granted permission to distribute funds directly to qualifying sport organizations through a dedicated program – Sport4Toronto Fund.
The Sport4Toronto Fund is administered by the PSO Council and provides grants to organizations to support athlete development in the City of Toronto including, but not limited to, access to facilities and services, equipment, registration, coach development, etc.  The purpose of the grants is to enhance the experience of athletes by supporting organizations to provide better services and opportunities for athletes.  The Sport4Toronto Fundwill provide grants of up to $5,000 to not-for-profit or charitable organizations working to increase access and participation in sport as described above. These programs must focus on athletes under 18 years of age at the start of the sport season or on athletes with a disability.

October 3, 2008 (Toronto): Ontario’s Olympic and Paralympic heroes showed off their gold, silver and bronze hardware at Queen’s Park today. Ontario athletes who competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Games were honoured at a reception hosted by the Honourable David C. Onley, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario.

George Smitherman will be the new Minister of Energy and Infrastructure and retains the post of Deputy Premier. The new Minister of Health and Long-Term Care is David Caplan.
 
June 16, 2008 – A new law that protects children under 16 years old from second-hand tobacco smoke in motor vehicles was passed in the Ontario legislature today.
Second-hand smoke in motor vehicles can be up to 27 times more concentrated than in a smoker’s home.

April 29, 2008 - Lawn bowling and triathlon will be part of the Ontario Summer Games for the first time when the games launch this summer in Ottawa, August 13-16.
The addition of these sports is made possible by a $45,000 provincial grant, which will also be used to increase the number of athletes in track and field, volleyball, BMX cycling and water skiing. This year’s games will feature 21 sports and over 3,800 athletes.

December 4, 2007 - TORONTO - Ontario is taking action to make schools healthier places to learn by moving to drop trans fat from lunchroom menus.
"Our kids' health is just too important to risk," said Premier Dalton McGuinty. "Trans fats have no place in our schools and we've got to act now."
